Chapter 21

Carver needed that car's description.

The license plate would have been even better, but he'd take anything he could get at this point. This guy was chasing Paola. Carver was dead in the water without actionable intel.

Liana frowned. "You don't have anything to go on? No license plate? No description?"

"Of course, I do, girl." Fani laughed and clapped her hands once like she'd won a prize. "I always enter the information into the computer right away. Otherwise, it doesn't get done."

"Do you usually keep a paper copy?" Liana asked.

"Always. I have to keep them for audits." Fani laughed again. "That man asked me if I'd entered the information in the computer. I told him I hadn't because I didn't want him erasing everything. He thought he was helping people avoid justice, but he underestimated me."

"Smart move," Liana said. "May we see this information?"

"Of course. Spread it far and wide. Maybe someone will catch this asshole."

"Aren't you concerned he'll come back for you?" Liana asked.

"I don't think he will. He'll be running scared now." Fani pushed up from her chair. Led them upstairs to an office. She sat down in an office chair and moved the mouse on the desk. The monitor blinked on. She opened a spreadsheet. Scrolled down to a section with yesterday's date on it.

The description and license plate were there.

"Oh, I almost forgot." She took out her phone. "I also took pictures of the car. I always take pictures so I can prove they were violating the rules if they try to contest the ticket."

"And you think this man is somehow connected to one of the people in this subdivision?" Liana said.

"Yes." Fani's lips curled with contempt. "The timing is just too perfect to be coincidence." She scrolled through images of other people's front yards. Pictures that had apparently been taken just a short time ago.

"Looks like the neighbors are constantly violating the rules," Liana said.

Fani sighed. "It's a full-time job keeping up with the slobs. I want this place to be a jewel in the center of the city."

"You're doing a great job." Liana gave her a thumbs up. "It must be extremely difficult and demanding."

"Thank you so much." Fani beamed. "It's a thankless job, but I am driven to keep our community clean and perfect." She stared at something on her phone. "Ah, here we go." She turned it around and showed them a picture of the car.

It was a black Honda CRV. An older model. The same kind of car that always seemed to be driving slowly in the passing lane when Carver was in a hurry to get somewhere.

"Can you send me those images?" Liana gave Fani the burner phone's number.

"Absolutely."

"Did you take pictures of the violations for this other woman's house? We want to take a deep look at this woman. Find out if we can connect her to the crime perpetrated against you."

"That would be amazing!" Fani's eyes lit with almost demonic pleasure. "I'd love to see her burn."

"We'll do what we can to help.
